How authentic are you in your career-life?

Authentic – a word not just used for leather handbags! How authentic are you really in career and life? Honestly now, hands up when you have managed (or been allowed) to be truly authentic for a whole day and what would it look like?

Authenticity is not …

OK so you have 24 hours to demonstrate your ‘true you’ how far removed are you fr0m the authentic career-life you hoped for? In the classic 1990’s film ‘Liar Liar’ Jim Carey’s character demonstrates clearly how as with a good diet – balance is everything! We’re not looking for career suicide or relationship mayhem, simply a more aligned version to our core vales.

As adults we know we have to be ”flexible, collaborative and compromising” at times – for the greater good, peace and harmony or simply because it actually serves our own purpose!  But what are the benefits to being ourselves?

Does being authentic make you ‘richer’?

In a recent article by https://www.entrepreneur.com/ Oprah Winfrey is quoted as saying;

 “I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.”   Oprah Winfrey

Without doubt there is ”Oprah Winfrey rich” and ”other” versions, either way the quote makes a very valid point regarding the rewards that being authentic can bring – the obvious dollar value and of course striving for the  ”authentic you”  in the workplace and home.

However it’s the breach of  core values (at work and home) that ‘de-values’ our identity and hinders our ability to be authentic.

All well and good I hear you say but how do I work with my ”authentic” in my career-life.  Based on Travis Bradberry’s article here are his ’10 Unmistakable Habits of Utterly Authentic People’;

  1. They help others to be their authentic selves.
  2. And let go of negative people.
  3. They express their true feelings and opinions, even when they’re not popular.
  4. And are confident.
  5. Have a preference for deep conversations to meaningless chatter.
  6. They don’t take anyone’s advice without evaluating it carefully first.
  7. They don’t complain about their problems.
  8. And are internally motivated.
  9. They make the best out of any situation.
  10. And finally they don’t get stressed or upset when someone doesn’t like them.

So the benefit to YOU by embracing just a couple of the above habits can only go to serving your personal happiness and wellbeing.  Time to unleash the authentic you?
